Reading Readiness Activities

READING READINESS ACTIVITIES

A large part of the kindergarten day focuses on reading readiness activities.

There are   several things you can do with your child to encourage success in this area.

1.    Practice reading and writing their first and last name using a capital at the beginning and lower case - "Annie Jones."

2.    Use puppets to act out or invent a story.

3.    Play guessing games, such as "I Spy Something Green..."

4.    When grocery shopping, ask your child to get you his favorite box of cereal,     etc.

 5.    Sing simple songs and nursery rhymes.  Rhyming is a critical and necessary skill and enhances the reading

        and writing process.

 6.    Engage in any activity that fosters discrimination skills:  largest, smallest, shortest, etc.

                      7.    READ TO YOUR CHILD DAILY

                        It fosters book awareness.

It helps develop verbal expression and increases vocabulary.

It models left to right progression.

                        It enhances detail awareness.

                        It stimulates your child's imagination.

It is an interactive activity which fosters conversations (unlike TV which is a passive

     activity).

It gives your child a general knowledge base.

It models a lifelong skill for their future success as readers.

It's a special time that you and your child can share together
