We have developed a new style of learning in the Montano Assistive Technology Center, a division of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Southern CT Inc. Therapists combine speech/language therapy with technology that is presented in a sensory integration environment. It was developed for individuals with autism and all other disabilities. (e.g. former non-verbal 30 yr old after 3 months initiates language, 5 yr old with 5 word vocabulary after 3 visits 26 of 48 words were initiated). It offers state
of the art technology and has been getting surprising results in the short time we have been open (8/06). One example of our technology, is a voice activated sensory technology that displays scenes on the wall, such as a
woodland scene with lights cascading across the screen or a mill pond that ripples with water currents when the individual speaks.
The goal of the center is to increase communication through programs that stress safety and following directions. We train parents and/or staff by having them take data during the intervention. By doing this, they observe the client's progress and witness the strategies that are implemented to attain the progress. We offer a multi- sensory approach to learning, where the individual hears, says, sees, and writes about the instruction. The hearing and seeing is augmented on dynamic and static communication devices. For example, if a person is working on the safety phrases of 'Please talk slowly", or "I have special needs, please read" they hand you a card for instructions for how to interact with a person with autism
