They are as follows: The Derby Public Schools believe that all children can learn and that students learn through different learning styles. All Derby students should have the opportunity to pursue the following ten goals: Communication - To read with comprehension and to communicate effectively both the spoken and written word. Critical Thinking - To develop critical thinking skills to enable the student to analyze and synthesize information and to draw inferences from previous knowledge. Also, to become problem solvers by using higher order thinking skills. Mathematics - To development computation skills in order to be able to solve problems mathematically. Technology - To prepare to function in a technological society and to become computer literate. Multi-Culturalism - To develop an appreciation and understanding of other cultures and the ability to relate to peers in a pluralistic society. Drug Education - To become knowledgeable of the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol and to recognize the consequences of their abuse. Resources - To develop the ability to access information from the school's media centers in order to expand upon their previous knowledge. Social & Governmental - To prepare to function as informed members of the community and society at large through an understanding of how the local, state and federal governments operate. Also, to gain an appreciation of the interrelationship of the different content areas. Arts - To develop a greater appreciation for the arts through exposure to different styles and periods and to experience the use of a variety of media. |
