Getting Ready for School |
|||
As the new school year begins, the Ansonia School Readiness Council encourages parents and families to become involved in their child's academic success. The beginning of the school year is a great time to begin new routines for both children and adults. These new routines should include times that promote learning, listening and love. Here are a few suggestions for parents: * Set aside 10 minutes each day to read aloud to your child. This is not just for parents whose children are in school. Reading aloud to babies and toddlers promotes language development and attention skills. * Parents should set aside a time and place for homework and learning activities. keep distractions such as the radio and television away from this area. Be sure to check that all homework is complete and put in a folder for the next day. * Ask your child's teacher, principal, or adminstrator how you can help at the school. Being involved at the school shows your child that you value education and it is important to you. * Turn off the TV for one hour a week and spend that hour playing board games, completing puzzles, or building with blocks. These types of activities are not only fun, but they build critical thinking skills as well. |
