Jumping Raisins

JUMPING RAISINS

First show your child how juicy, round grapes become

dried, wrinkled raisins. Heat causes the water in grapes to

evaporate. Dry other fruits and vegetables. Slice pears and

peaches very thin, dip into lemon juice, and spread on a

basket or screen outside in the sun. Cover with cheesecloth

and allow to dry for a few days.

You’ll Need: 4-6 raisins l club soda, seltzer or lemon soda

l tall, clear glass • spoon

What to Do:

1. Help your child pour club soda, seltzer, or lemon soda

into a tall, clear glass.

2. Let him add 4 to 6 raisins.

3. Encourage your child to observe what happens.

(Raisins will sink to the bottom, then slowly rise to

the top. They will continue to jump up and down for

several minutes.) If your child wonders how the raisins

dance, they ride on the gas bubbles that are lighter than

the soda.

4. When your child is finished observing, he can drink

the soda. Then he can scoop the raisins out with a

spoon and eat them.
